the harbor - ugandan lgbt youth center

Discrimination creates castaways. Too many Ugandan LGBT youth are rejected by their families and communities, set adrift to navigate a hostile and dangerous society alone. Beyond the city limits of Kampala, The Harbor welcomes these wanderers, offering them spaces of comfort and protection. Like the diverse group it serves, it is not a singular structure but a community of varied shelters, each offering a unique program and perspective. Their individual forms speak to the inherent tensions between ideas of comfort, visibility, and security for Ugandan LGBT - the rainbows of local earth that form their outer walls instill a sense of stability, might, and protection, yet they face each other with outspread arms and spill out through a porous facade to a shared courtyard, enforcing a feeling of openness and community.
